Both Debbie and Burl are of Scottish descent. Debbie's father was a colonel in the British army who later became an MP, and served as the British Ambassador to Chile.
Burl's father was a Scottish doctor who worked in Hawaii for the U.S. Government and who played a major role in Burl's life, as the only person who was aware of the amnesia Debbie was suffering from. The Cartwrights were raised in the Scottish Presbyterian tradition. Burl was taught to be a devout Christian, while Debbie was a lapsed Catholic.
The theme song is not a strict ballad, and features a driving piano part that belies its folk song feel. The key of the theme song is C minor, with a chord sequence of Bb, F, and D. The chord progression is: Fm7(9)-C-Bb, the latter of which is a V-I cadence in C minor. While the song is in 2/4 meter, with the meter being 6/8 in the verse and 12/8 in the chorus, the meter is not consistent in the song.
The theme song is sung by Billy Joel and Randy Newman, and produced by Joe Porcaro, who was known as the world's greatest keyboardist in the late '60s to the '90s. It's a fun song and is available on Joel's Greatest Hits album.
